38846 caractères et 22 pages plus tard, j'ai entièrement fini tout ce qui me rapportait à Georgia Tech.
Je ne peux que finir, avec ma conclusion de rapport de séjour d'étude.

Conclusion
La troisième année à l’étranger est une expérience extrêmement enrichissante car elle force à la fois à s’adapter et à se confronter à une autre culture. Le dépaysement oblige à reconsidérer les fondamentaux de la vie et nous ouvre à des valeurs très différentes des nôtres. C’est une expérience extraordinaire qui permet de rencontrer des gens formidables, de suivre des cours différents de ceux de Sciences Po et de faire des voyages inoubliables.
Georgia Tech m’a permis de rencontrer des étudiants et des professeurs extraordinaires, de visiter des villes magnifiques, et de me mettre en contact avec une culture traditionnelle du Sud des États-Unis que seule une expérience étudiante sur un campus comme celui-ci peut offrir. Je me suis complètement immergée dans cette université, avec les cours, mon stage, mes voyages et mes amis et j’en ai tiré une joie et un enrichissement indescriptibles. Je retournerais à Georgia Tech d’un battement de cil, et conseillerais cette université sans hésiter pour tout ce qu’elle m’a apporté et apporterait à n’importe quel étudiant motivé. Mon anglais en a été grandement amélioré, et je suis presque certaine d’ajouter la mention bilingue à mon diplôme de Sciences Po. De plus cette année m’a aidé à former et préciser mon projet personnel et à mûrir un plan de carrière plus élaboré que ce que je n’avais en arrivant.
Cette année a été au-delà de tous les objectifs que je m’étais fixés d’obtenir des notes convenables, d’essayer d’en apprendre plus sur les États-Unis et de préciser mon projet personnel. Jamais je n’aurais cru apprécier autant une culture nouvelle faite de musique country, de traditions cajuns ou sud-américaine, de culture afro-américaine, et de me prendre de passion pour de nouveaux sujets académiques comme l’environnement et l’Union Européenne.

Bonjour à tous !
Aujourd'hui est le jour tant attendu de la fin de mon année. Pas tout à fait un an depuis que j'ai écrit pour la première fois sur ce blog, mais tellement d'expériences vécues, de fêtes, de soirées, de diners, de cours, de contrôles, de nuits blanches... d'amis, de connaissances, de drames et de joies, de rires, de sourires, de photos... de voyages, de soirées à la maison, à delta sig, ailleurs, sur le campus, à atlanta...
J'ai passé une année exceptionnelle; et nous voilà à la fin de mon périple.
J'espère que vous avez apprécié de garder contact avec moi à travers ce blog, et que nous vivrons encore tellement d'aventures, même si je ne les publierais peut-être pas.
Merci d'avoir suivit cette année en ma compagnie.

Plus que quelques jours, je finis mes exams demain, un papier de 12 pages et un memo de 2, et j'ai fini, je paque mes bagages et dans une semaine exactement je serais dans l'avion pour Paris.
Chanson d'amour un peu mélancholique que j'écoute en boucle aujourd'hui :

Je vous raconte la fin de mon séjour très bientôt, au programme Barbecue à iHouse mercredi dernier, jeudi diner d'au revoir de Carlos, vendredi bronzette, barbecue à delta sig, Shout et salsa, piscine chez Delta Sig et samedi diner avec Johann un français qui va rester l'été et l'automne et qui vient de l'ESTP FR comme Christophe. Il fait 80°F (30°C!) et impossible de se concentrer sur les exams de fin d'année vue le beau temps ^^ (excuses, excuses... lol!)

Bref plus de nouvelles à venir très bientôt

IS PROPERTY THEFT?

“If you asked me ‘what is slavery’, I would tell you ‘it is murder’, […] if you asked me ‘what is property’, I would answer ‘it is theft’” wrote Proudhon in 1840 in What is property[1]? Although Proudhon came back to this statement later on, this statement alone, and often taken out of context, has been the origin for countless philosophical arguments on property, theft and law, but also liberty. Indeed the formulation notwithstanding, that is no sole question of theft that Proudhon reflects on, but of Nature, Liberty and Justice. It is also a question of work, and the exclusion of others within the act of ownership. Therefore to understand this statement, and possibly refute it, there needs to be a reflection on whatever is property, possession, but also liberty, exploitation… leading to an ongoing debate of anarchists and capitalists over the right to own.

In Law, one distinguishes three pillars structural of property (whether private or collective – public or State-owned): the use, fruit and alienation (usus, fructus and abusus). The use (usus), is the right to use of a good (house, apple, etc) without one being able to dispute it to you. The fruit (or fructus), it is the free pleasure of what a good produces. The typical example is the orchard or the kitchen garden, whose fruits (and vegetables) go to the beneficiary owner, in most cases (there is however cases where the holder of the usus is not the same one as that of the fructus). The exercise of these two rights is possession, which thus makes it possible to profit from the usufruct of a good.

In Philosophy, the distinction between the three pillars is decisive if we want to distinguish the property that can be considered as theft (fructus) and the property that frees people (abusus).

How could property be at the same time exclusive and liberating? How can it be at the same time exploiting, thievery, and a way towards freedom and independence?

This dispute is not a young one. Proudhon was not the first philosopher to discuss the notion of rightful ownership. In Jacques le Fataliste[2], Diderot discussed through a powerful allegory the unrightfully claimed castle of Nature. Through time philosophers have asked themselves what distinguishes nature from society, and the act of claiming a piece of Nature a one’s own is an act of humanization of Nature. Ownership is the first step to creating a civil society and getting out of the State of Nature. However the real step to getting out of the State of Nature is that one that sets men free. Ownership, though literally a characteristic of free men in most modern societies (especially through voting laws), is not philosophically freeing. For Hegel, freedom is sprung not from ownership (fructus) but from the act of possession that is work (abusus).

We will see that the ownership can be considered as thievery, because only work can give value. Those who benefit from goods through their sole ownership (fructus) exploit the value of work of other people without working themselves and steal them from their rightful value. Moreover ownership as the exclusion of others from the owned good is a constraint of other’s liberties. However, as Proudhon recognized it himself later on, not all property is necessarily negative. The civil State sprung from claims of property, the property of goods is also a way to protect, save and preserve them against their disappearance or alienation. Moreover there is risk in ownership and investment of capital, implying work and effort on the owner’s part.

It is commonly accepted amongst philosophers who have studied the concept of the State of Nature that such a state knows no concept of property. All is everyone’s and anything is common, collective, unprotected.

Hobbes supported this view that property is not a natural right. “Out of society, each one has so much right on all things that it cannot be prevailed from him and has the possession of none; but in the republic, each one enjoys its particular right peacefully.”[3] (De Cive, 1642). Before the formation of society, whereas everyone enjoys the fruits of nature, none can call it his own, and none can claim its exclusive fructus.

But men, as we know from empirical experience, have claimed that right. It does not mean that it is a rightful claim, and proves that it is unnatural; such is the lesson of Jacques the Fatalist. “I do not belong to anybody and I belong to everyone. You were there before entering and will still be here when you leave. ” Such is the enigmatic inscription that Jacques and his Master read at the frontispiece of a castle discovered during a storm that constrained them to take refuge. Diderot, in this extract of Jacques the Fatalist, takes part of this movement of thought which calls in question the notion of property. This castle is an allegory of Nature (as we can decipher from the second part of the inscription). Later on, visiting the interior, Jacques and his master make a discovery that has not changed since Diderot wrote his essay: “What shocked more the Jacques and his Master was to find a score of daring adventurers, who had seized the most superb apartments, which they always thought to be too small; who claimed against the common right and the true direction of the inscription that the castle had been bequeathed to them like any property… ”

Nature belongs to anybody, the property is not thus ever but one abuse of power… It is not natural; here is the lesson which it is advisable to draw from the reading of the inscription of the castle.

Property is exploitation. The owner does not produce anything. He steals the fruit of the work of those which use its goods and condemns them to have nothing. In The Master-Slave dialectic [4](also translated as Lordship and Bondage), Hegel theorized that the only true free man is the worker, even enslaved, for the exploitation (usus) of an object frees, whereas the master, though free, is truly enslaved by the sole pleasure of the object (fructus). Hegel is one of the main advocators of this philosophical argument that work is the true freedom, and that through work men realize themselves. A table before men is a log, but after being touched, worked on, the log is transformed, humanized, it is no longer a mere accident but the product of a thought, a project, and a physical transformation. After being owned a table is a table, and enjoyed, eaten on, looked at, it is still a table, unchanged, without the print of its owner. The worker on the other hand learned about the table, the wood, and the time it took, the way to modify such an object. Working, the worker has realized himself as a table-maker, learned in the process and freed himself through his work and the independence that if needed he could make another table. The owner in the act of owning does not know anything about himself, or the table. He depends on the worker for the place he eats. He is not free.

In the anarchist-socialist philosophy, the exploitation of others for work is the very definition of thievery. Each penny which enlarges the fortune of the owners is stolen from the wages of the workers. It is not right that the workman who does all the work is maintained in poverty whereas the owner who is an idle has all the benefit. The possession of goods (grounds, money, and capital) perverts this process and devalues work. The owner indeed rents what he has to the non-owners who need to work. He does not work himself, and the wages that he pays the workers are such that the workers cannot invest them or transform them into capital. The owner is not giving to his employees as much as they would have benefiting from the sole object of their work if they owned and did not have to depend on the owner for a place to work. Moreover Proudhon attacks the principle of interests, which in his period are undefined in time, for that small portion of the product of work goes to the owner without him having to put in any work in the process. By doing this, he steals to the active people their benefit. Rent, revenue, interest rates, rights and taxes of all kinds, such are the means by which the owner despoils the workers of the product of their work. When this phenomenon spreads on the scale of society, it leads to an increasing impoverishment and social injustice. Property is thus a source of misery for a majority of the population, even if the access is theoretically free. The workers will never be able to become owners, because they are maintained in the dependence by those who exploit them.

Property implies an exclusive right of the owner on a good, which it can oppose to all those who are not owner of this good. Consequently, the property imprisons the not-owners of a good compared to this one. But there is more. As one could not be owner of all the goods, one is fatally limited, excluded, imprisoned by the exercises of properties of which we are not the holders. Property does not release at all: it encloses in a yoke under pretext of stability in the social reports/ratios the unit of the goods of a manner such as a man can die of thirst beside a well or of cold, close to a private home.

Another impact of the property: the need for defending it. If we have the illusion to live free in a State of right, concrete reality is very different: vigils, cops, conveyors, lock, keys, alarms, etc are there to recall us that the property must be defended to exist because its balance is continuously disputed by those which are called robbers. But there are several implications to this defense of private property. Firstly, and because the State protects private property, property implies police, for the defense of one’s good is the defense against other’s will to use or appropriate said good. Instead of a protecting State sprung from the state of nature to bring civil law and protection to all men, property creates a police state self-nourishing on the necessity to protect private property from hostile interests and take-over. Being unable to differentiate between potential threats to property and other civilians, the State constrains everyone to a single category, the citizens. The State’s sole purpose becomes therefore to prevent citizens from violating owner’s properties. Property and ownership bring liberty constrains and police enforcement to the world. Property can therefore be blamed for the theft of rights, right to absolute movement (interdiction to violate private property, breaking an entrance, robbery…). As one is master in his own home, one could also blame such property to constrain not only the fruit of any good place in such home, but also the constrain to actions, speech, and everything that the ‘master’ based on such property thinks himself entitled to claim (‘in my house, follow my rules, do as I say and do not say what I do not want to hear’).

The only solution to prevent injustice and let liberty prevail is therefore the suppression of property. In 1516, Thomas More was persuaded of it: «... the single means of distributing the goods with equality, justice and of constituting the happiness of mankind is the abolition of property».[5] Utopia, literally ‘nowhere’, has come to be seen as -as its subtitle reckoned- the best possible state, a state based on mutualism and without ownership. Utopia is the mutualist state by excellence and the lack of war, poverty, unemployment… makes it an enviable perspective – to a certain extent. It is a proof – though fictional – that there can be no property without falling into the initial ultra-violent state of Nature.

The criticism of property is in two forms: the criticism of the appropriation, and the criticism of conservation, which are always to the detriment of someone else.

Property is considered by numerous philosophers to be unnatural, one of the main differences from the state of Nature to the state of Law. Conversely, in his "Two Treatises of Government"[6] Locke argues that the State is merely there to protect the citizen’s natural right of property. The fruit of the union of the earth and one’s body leads to a natural right of ownership of a part of earth by one. To Locke, property is actually a natural right, which civil society is only there to protect. Hobbes, and later Rousseau, argued that property exists only through civil laws given by the sovereign. Locke's account of the methods of and limits of property acquisition in the state of nature differ from those of Hobbes. Hobbes argued that property was a civil right; Locke that property was a natural right.

“The first which, having enclosed a ground, thought of saying: This is mine, and found people simple enough to believe it, was the true founder of the civil society”[7] said Rousseau. Such discourse, to him, was at the origin of violence, crimes, murders, wars… for “you are lost, if you forget that fruits belong to all, and the earth to no one” (second discourse).

Rousseau’s conception of property is that property founded civil society.

His conception of society was that in so doing, it ruined it for men and that society was at the origin of the second most important inequality among men: moral inequality. However this conception gives property a new meaning, it is the founder of society.

When we consider some philosophical conceptions and theories of the State of Nature, within which men are wolves to men (Hobbes), the contraction of such society is a positive state.

Moreover Property is seen by many as a fundamental right: “Property being an inviolable and crowned right, no one can be prevented from its exercise”[8]. I our modern occidental societies, property is one of the most fundamental rights. Our liberty consists in part in our capacity to possess some things as our own. It is the basis for the capitalism and the society of consumption. But more importantly, property was once one major difference between individuals. Property differentiated between free men and slaves, men and women (who could not possess and were therefore second class citizens dependent on their husbands or fathers), and between those who voted and those who could not through the cens, system of suffrage based on a tax threshold system or property ownership.

Property is a liberator since owning gives the independence necessary to vote, but also to be able to stand against the state (nobles in France, Medieval order, British Lords…) and guarantee the honesty and standing of the government. It is harder to get leverage on someone who could potentially insure his own sustenance and is in charge of one’s own business. A worker, dependent on the one who gives him work, would be easier to put pressure on, would be less free and less independent than the proprietor who is potentially self-sufficient.

Jules Favre said “in my profound conviction, property, reward for work, […] [is] an eternal institution which […] will stay a basis for the democratic order we will found”.[9] Indeed property is the reward that one gets in exchange for work. Those who merit find themselves rightful owners of objects worked for. Thus in our society everyone can access to property according to one’s means and merit.

Moreover in liberal societies, the wealth of an individual depends on the risks that one takes with what is his and compared to the stakes that are in the balance. An owner struggles everyday to fructify its property, and by taking risks with what is his, is actually making proof of the intensity and the quality of its commercial handling of land, property, actions… etc. Property is the recompense of the entrepreneur, the risk taker. When the worker only works and goes back home, satisfied with the rent of his work force to sustain himself and those at his charge, the owner is risking his property every day, fights daily to insure the success of his enterprise.

Property may appear as a wrongful exploitation of workforce by idle property or capital owners making profit out of the poor and excluding the rest of the world from property wrongfully obtained. But property is a major component of liberty, political and social independence, and a ground for civil society. Finally, we can say that property is also a ground for democracy and preservation.

The socialist, pseudo-Marxist, communist and pseudo-anarchist economies have thus far never succeeded in maintaining a valid and durable society. Indeed, they always failed for some reason often because people could not sustain a work not motivated by individualist gain and profit, or because they reached a critical size that forbad them to work efficiently. Stephen Peplow[10] tells the story of a 17^th century Massachusetts anarchist colony that starved to death because one person decided not to work, and everyone else followed his example.

Even Proudhon came back and explained that he had been misinterpreted in his own quote. He affirmed in fine that “property is freedom”. He explained that when he said that property is theft, it had been included/understood with misconception: it designated in fact idle land-owners who, in his opinion, stole the profits from the workers. More generally, he spoke about the people who draw an income without working. In Theory of the property, he affirms that “property is the only force which can be used as counterweight to the State”. Thus, « Proudhon can retain the idea of property as theft, and at the same time offer a new definition of it as liberty. There is the constant possibility of abuse, exploitation, which spells theft. At the same time property is a spontaneous creation of society and a bulwark against the ever-encroaching power of the State ». [11]Thus property is a principal eternal contradiction which explains society.

In the Tragedy of the Commons[12], Hardin tells us indirectly that property is not only liberating, it is preserving. When the pasture belongs to all, the maximization of each is to use and abuse it until there is no more left and the soil, damaged, is unusable. According to Hardin however, owning the pasture would never lead to such a consequence, for ownership leads pastors to take care of the land. Their interest instead of overusing the pasture until death follows, is to keep and nurture the pastures so that their sheep will always be able to enjoy the pastures and their benefit will be longer lasting. Mutualism in this story is the very reason of exploitation and irreparable damage to the commons. Property, on the contrary, ensures preservation of the commons. Common goods are never as well kept as individual goods. Property in this case is a benefit for the good itself. The example of the Bengal tiger enters the same category. Commons that are not common good (which the use of does not exclude others use of) disappear, whereas people have greater incentive of sustaining their goods and preserving them. Property is therefore a positive for goods which, if mutual, would be destroyed but selfish overuse.

We have seen that Proudhon’s sentence was but an initial thought on private property under certain circumstances, namely wrongful means of ownership and monopoly of usage exploiting workers by undeserving owners. However, looking into the arguments against ownership and those arguing that property is a means of freedom, it appears that there is not one clear answer as to whether property if theft. Property can be considered as undeserved appropriation of goods that should not be benefiting (fructus) those who do not possess them (usus), but it is at the same time liberating and can reveal beneficial aspects.

There is a positive and a negative side to property. Positive, for property is a fundamental right and a guarantee of freedom and independence of the owner regarding other social forces trying to exercise power, authority and political influence over him. Negative, if property is abusive, and always when wrongfully obtained and is the monopole of few owners dictating their laws and imposing their interests on the majority who only has the minimum. The most important right considering property is to guarantee equal access and non exclusive benefice. However Marx himself was against mutualism, for the total absence of ownership can sometimes have unfortunate consequences as we have seen.

An anarchic society is a “form of social organization in which nobody is in charge; nobody tries to control other people, assuming human beings can be good if left to their own devices”. [13]However it does not require the absence of property, but the absence of hierarchy. Therefore if everyone has enough to live everyday and if there is no hierarchy, there needs to be neither property nor absence of property for a society to live in “anarchy”. However the vision of men is important. If men are intrinsically good and able to live without violating others, then there can be absence of property. Unfortunately, if we consider that men are violent and individualist, a society without the rule of law to protect and ensure the safety of people and goods would be nothing but the worse of states of nature. There would be nothing but violence and no protection or preservation of commons. It would be chaos not anarchy.

Hell Week

Bonjour a tous!
Cette semaine est terrible pour moi, a cause du travail et des examens. Plus que 3 semaines a Georgia Tech, et la deniere est tres legere meme si c'est cense etre l'exam week. Les semaines a venir ont des noms super attirants : cette semaine c'est Hell Week , la semaine prochaine Dead Week et la suivante Final Week. Le tout donnant legerement envie de s'enfoncer sous sa couette sans en sortir jusqu'a mon avion de retour ^^ Mais ne vous en faites pas, je ne me laisse pas abattre et je m'y met, doucement mais surement.
La semaine a tout de meme super bien commencee par un week end excellent en Alabama chez John Glisson ou j'ai passe le week end au bord d'un lac. Jeudi j'ai revu Thomas et nous avons fete son anniversaire (21 ans, super important ici!), et nous nous sommes recomcilies! Il m'a donc invite a passer le week end avec lui, ce que j'ai fait. Le premier jour etait terrible, vendredi soir il a grele des bloc de glaces gros comme des balles de golf! Mais samedi et dimanche il a fait super beau, 75F (25C?) et un ciel bleu azur. J'ai fait du Jet Ski, ou plutot du Wave Runner, j'ai fait de la bouee et j'ai bronze sur le bateau de mon ami, et sur le ponton, bref que du bonheur. Le tout avec mes delta sig evidemment (c'etait le Lake Week End de delta sig).

Mais rentree a la maison les choses serieuses ont commence. Plein de courbatures mais le moral a fond, j'ai commence par un exam oral d'allemand Lundi, un test d'allemand mardi, mercredi j'ai un exam final en recherche en sciences sociales (que je revise en ce moment, ca se voit...), puis j'ecris mes papiers et je lis les textes obligatoires de philo et sur les femmes (Anarchy et Women in Public Policy) le tout soupoudre des grosses fete de l'annees (et les dernieres) Ship Wreck pour Delta Sig, Magic Carpet ride pour Lamda Chi, Paradise Island pour Fiji, Luau pour Kappa Sig etc... Vendredi soir il y a un concert a Georgia Tech, avec OAR un groupe repute dans le sud, Samedi toute la journee je vais faire du Whitewater rafting dans le Tennessee, et Dimanche nous avons le Gala de l'IHouse.
Puis la semaine prochaine Dead Week ce qui veut dire que je vais mourir : presentation finale en Women in public policy, Memorandum et papier final dans la meme classe, Jurnal de lecture et papier final en Philo de l'Anarchy, presentation en groupe en Sciences Sociales et finalement pendant Finals Week exam final d'allemand et papier de sciences sociales.

Souhaitez moi bonne chance, et pas bon sommeil car je ne vais pas dormir beaucoup !! ^^

Research Methods – PUBPP 3110 – Aaron Levine

Ce cours m’a permis de m’entrainer à la collection de données et de comprendre les types de données, les façons les plus simples de les collecter et les risques et avantages corrélés a ces collections. A travers une série d’assignements, d’entretiens, de questionnaires, nous avons créé une recherche et un sujet de dissertation tentant de trouver une corrélation entre les convictions environnementales et les actions individuelles des habitants d’Atlanta.

Towards The United States of Europe – INTA 4803 – Katja Weber

A travers ce cours donné par une professeur d’origine allemande et avec une trentaine d’étudiants américains, j’ai pu compléter ma formation de Sciences Po en affaires politiques européennes. Avec un récapitulatif de l’histoire de l’Europe et de la construction européenne, des visions sociopolitiques et une réflexion sur le futur de l’Europe, ce cours permettait d’envisager une prévision a la construction telle que nous la connaissons aujourd’hui.

J’ai suivit au second semestre un cours d’allemand moyen-fort afin de ne pas perdre mon niveau dans ma seconde langue lors de mon immersion dans un environnement complètement anglophone. Bien qu’enseignée en anglais la classe était très semblable à un cours d’allemand tel que j’ai pu les suivre en France.

Women and Public Policy – PUBP 4212 – Clarisse Leggon

Dans ce séminaire d’une dizaine d’étudiants, à travers deux présentations orales, un policy memo, un papier de recherche et des discussions, nous avons exploré la relation entre les femmes et la vie publique. Les femmes et l’emploi, la médecine, les sciences, la reproduction, l’éducation, et autres sujets représentent d’importantes discussions. Malgré les progrès qui ont eu lieu surtout au vingtième siècle, les femmes souffrent toujours de discrimination. De plus ma recherche de fin de semestre m’a permis d’allier femmes et environnement, et de réfléchir ainsi à l’évolution de mon projet personnel.

Philosophy of Anarchy – PUBP 4803 – Jeremy Farris

Malgré le titre prometteur de ce séminaire, les cours de trois heures une fois par semaine se sont surtout concentrés sur la justification de la légitimité de l’autorité. Autour de questions comme l’autorité de Dieu, de l’Etat, de l’émergence d’une forme de gouvernement, la question de l’anarchie et de droits, nous avons cherché à comprendre l’anarchie et ses justifications.

Pour ma troisième année d’études à Sciences Po Paris je suis allée à Georgia Tech, diminutif de Georgia Institute of Technology. Le choix des Etats Unis était très facile pour moi qui avait déjà été en « Summer School » deux étés aux Etats Unis et qui voulait perfectionner mon anglais afin de pouvoir être bilingue à mon retour. J’ai eu également la chance d’être présente pendant une année électorale et d’observer de première main les effets du changement présidentiel et de la récession.
Georgia Tech est une école particulièrement renommée pour ses ingénieurs, reconnue particulièrement pour la recherche et pour ses diplômes d’Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering et Aerospace Engineering, parmi les meilleurs du pays. Comparable a des universités comme le Massachussetts Institute of Technology, mais entièrement publique et accréditée par la Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), Georgia Tech est aujourd’hui classée parmi les 10 meilleures universites publiques des Etats Unis (U.S. News & World Report).

Le Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts est également un très bon College même s’il n’est pas aussi renommé que les autres écoles de Georgia Tech. Avec plus de 19,000 étudiants, Georgia Tech est tout de même un campus de 400 acres au cœur de la ville d’Atlanta, en faisant un compromis idéal entre la vie de campus et la vie urbaine.

Le dossier pour entrer à Georgia Tech est très similaire de celui de la plupart des universités américaines. Pour être accepté il faut un résultat d’au moins 100 au TEOFL (test d’aptitude de langue en anglais comme langue étrangère). Passer le TOEFL demande de l’entrainement et de s’y prendre a l’avance car il y a souvent des difficultés à le passer, réserver donc une place dans un centre au début de la deuxième année est fortement conseillé.

Après l’acceptation, il faut remplir un dossier à renvoyer à Georgia Tech, et prendre un rendez vous a l’ambassade des Etats unis (voir annexe) pour un visa. Enfin il faut choisir un logement (voir ci-après). Pour l’année il est recommandé de rassembler environ 14 000$, sujet à changements selon les années. Une justification des fonds sera requise par l’université et le pays lors du passage a l’ambassade.

Le climat en Géorgie est très changeant. Le premier semestre est généralement très chaud et relativement humide, prolongeant l’été du début des classes en août jusqu'au milieu de l’automne. Le second semestre au contraire est relativement froid, avec des températures hivernales plongeant dans les négatifs (Celsius) et des pluies régulières jusqu'à l’arrivée de l’été. Si vous ne voulez pas les acheter sur place, emportez donc des affaires légères autant que des affaires chaudes (manteaux, parka, chaussures imperméables, sandales, t-shirt et shorts). Ne vous étonnez pas non plus si un jour les étudiants sont en claquettes et le lendemain en bottes fourrées, le temps change très vite.

Les compagnies aériennes n’acceptent en général que 23kg par valise et deux bagages par personne, plus un ou deux bagages cabine. Préparez donc des bagages intelligemment ! Les vêtements aux Etats Unis sont souvent moins chers qu’en France et Atlanta avec plusieurs ‘Mall’ (centre commerciaux) et un groupement de boutiques (Atlantic Station) proches du campus offre de nombreuses occasions de s’équiper sur place.

Les styles vestimentaires aux Etats unis ne sont pas très différents de la France à ceci près qu’il n’est pas vraiment requis de s’habiller correctement pour aller en cours. Il m’est arrive a de nombreuses reprises de voir des étudiants en bas de pyjamas lors des cours du matin, et en shorts, t-shirt, sweat-shirts, tongs, avec des casquettes… en classe. D’après des amies la mode est une option sur le campus, surtout Georgia Tech qui est un campus d’ingénieurs plus occupes par leurs cours que par la mode. Il n’y a pas besoin de porter des vêtements de marques ou des talons pour faire impression, un bon esprit d’analyse suffit.

Pour la décoration de la chambre, et le nécessaire comme les ustensiles de cuisine ou la literie, un IKEA est situe très proche du campus et permet de s’équiper très facilement sans avoir à s’encombrer. Comme je l’ai dit plus tôt, à proximité du campus se trouvent également Lennox Mall et Atlantic Station, ou il est très aisé de se rendre pour faire des achats.

Comment profiter de ses dernières semaines...

Je ne sais pas si je vous ai parlé en détail de mes cours ce semestre, je le ferais très bientôt. Les cours touchent à leur fin, mais les fêtes elles, sont plus puissantes que jamais. D'ailleurs, dans deux semaines presque toutes les fraternités du campus ont leur 'soirée de l'année', ShipWreck pour Delta Sig, Magic Carpet Ride pour Lambda Chi, Paradise Island pour Fiji... Je crois que celle de Beta était ce week end, et la soirée Viking d'ATO était le week end dernier. Ce sont des soirées en deux ou trois jours où la fraternité est entièrement destinée à faire la fête (je vous parlerais de tout cela plus en détail vers le 20 lorsque je sortirais de ce week end de dingues! ^^).
Ce week end était un week end plus conventionnel, mais tout de même excellent. Premièrement, il a commencé très étrangement, et très... tôt. Mardi soir un ami a moi (Danny) voulait faire quelque chose de dingue et d'imprévu, nous avons donc été faire la tourné e des bars à Virginia Highlands en plein milieu de semaine. Nous avons croisé par hasard Linda dans un des bars où nous sommes allés. C'était très amusant, imprévu et agréable de se retrouver entre amis pour une soirée totalement inédite.

Le reste du week end a eu lieu plus conventionnellement pendant... le week end ^^ Vendredi Suzy Linda et moi avons mangé à Atlantic Station, commençant avec une bouteille de vin. De retour à l'iHouse, les iHousers étaient groupés autour d'une chicha, puis avec Gabriel et les autres internationaux de west campus, nous avons commencé à frat-hopper (la tournée des fraternités en gros). Delta Sig avait une grosse Blacklight party très arrosée et pleine de jeunes qui visitaient Georgia tech, probablement en spring break.
Beta, où nous avons passé la majeure partie de la soirée, avait un groupe qui chantait en plein air.
Samedi était bien plus incroyable,car nous sommes allés au Marc Jacobs 2009 Spring Fashion Show à Primal (un club sur Spring Street). A nouveau j'y suis allée avec Linda et Danny.
Le show était très bon, la boite excellente, énorme, avec bars, 4 dance floors, des ambiances totalement différentes, bref une super soirée avec beaucoup d'amis (une bonne partie des ihousers y étaient également).

Dima,nche j'ai été voir I Love You, Man au cinéma et ce film est excellent et hillarant! A voir.

Voilà je suis donc entière, le moral à bloc et des cernes sous les yeux, très heureuse et prête à attaquer la montagne de boulot qui m'attends maintenant et pour les deux semaines à venir sous des milliers de mots et autant de concepts dans mes classes pour finir l'année.

Bonjour!

J'ai été très en retard pour donner des nouvelles et j'en suis désolée. Ces dernières semaines ont été fortes en émotions et en voyages, j'ai donc eu peu de temps pour mon blog et j'en suis désolée. Nous arrivons a la fin de mon séjour, et je suis plus occupée que jamais.
Pour raconter ces dernières semaines, je vais tenter une chronologie. J'ai passé une semaine ou presque a Savannah, la seule ville ou presque de Géorgie a se trouver sur la cote Atlantique. Invitée par Kyle Thomas, un delta sig, j'ai passé quelques jours avec sa petite amie, son collocataire et sa fiancee. Savannah est un adorable village de bord de mer avec une quantitée d'histoires de fantomes et autres anecdotes que nous avons pu decouvrir lors d'une visite dans un... charriot des pompes funebres! Extraordianairement divertissant meme si cela pouvait donner des frissons ! Certaines histoires etaient vraiment effrayante...
Le week end ressemblait a une pale copie de la Nouvelle Orleans pendant mardi gras, mais une copie tout de vert avec les beads et autres bonnets aux couleurs de l'irlande.
Le dimanche nous sommes allés a la plage, et la ressemblance avec le Touquet était frappante, la plage de sable, le vent et les temperatures vraiment frisquettes pour un mois de mars. Mais le fait d'etre avec tant d'amis, les delta sig, les delta ups, était vraiment agréable.

Le mardi etait St Patrick's Day, nous nous sommes levés a l'aube pour etre au centre de Savannah a 8heures du matin ! La matinée etait peuplée de personnes tous habillées de vert et de beaucoup d'alcool, je n'ai jamais vu autant de gens adultes (et je veux dire parents) ivres si tot dans la journee! La parade etait aussi amusante et agréable, avec des dizaines de differentes drums & bagpipes clans de Savannah, New York, Chicago et d'autres.

Finalement nous sommes retournés a Atlanta le vendredi... seulement pour que je reparte le samedi matin !
Je suis allée a Charlotte pour une competition de dance de salon (Ballroom Dancing). Je participait en Valse, Quickstep, Jive, Chacha et Rumba.
Je n'ai pas vraiment gagné, la competition n'était pas vraiment juste étant donné que le couple qui a remporté ma catégorie a également remporté la suivante et plus avancée.
Au final j'ai quand meme passé un excellent spring break plein d'émotions et de nouvelles experiences. Meme si je n'ai pas gagné de medaille ou quoi que ce soit, je suis contente d'avoir participé a la competition.

Samedi dernier, j'ai ete a la Bachelorette party de Jessica, qui se marrie en Mai. Nous avons commence par une lingerie, Naughty&Nice shower a son appartement, puis nous avons dine a Loca Luna, ete au Flip Flops un bar a ambiance Californienne et fini au Cheetah.

Par la suite il me faut faire un questionnaire téléphonique qui me prendra quelques heures pour seulement une dizaines d'entretiens, un papier en Women & public policy, un mémo dans la même classe, un papier sur les résultats de mon questionnaire, un test dans ma classe de recherche dans quelques semaines, un test d'allemand, des lectures en philosophie et un papier en anarchy... aille ! beaucoup de travail en seulement quatre semaines !!

Grace à l'OIE, j'ai passé le samedi du dernier week end de Mars à me balader dans la Géorgie profonde... ou presque. Nous sommes partis tôt le matin, la tête dans le brouillard, alors qu'il pleuvait déjà abondemment, et avons passé la journée dans le car. D'abord pour aller à Madison, adorable ville de peut être 5 000 habitants, totalement conservée depuis la guerre de sécession et dont les maisons en bois et style colonial (?) dataient plus ou moins toute de la première moitié du 19ème siècle.
Nous avons aussi visité une maison témoin entièrement meublée (et hantée, bien sur)

Puis nous sommes allées à Athens, où se trouve l'universitée de Georgia UGA, ennemie mortelle de Georgia Tech, que nous avons battu au Football en novembre (nous les rencontrons une fois par an le samedi après thanksgiving tous les ans depuis au moins une centaine d'années), et qui était un campus extraordinaire, une architecture à colonnes faussement retour à la grèce antique, un campus énorme, un downtown super cool, avec pubs bars et très bon burgers. La ville d'Athens vie pour son université (crée pour son universitée comme la première école publique aux états unis au 18ème siècle, sur le modèle de Yale une des plus vielles universités du pays mais privée), et ses étudiants, avec 200 bars dans une ville grande comme les arrondissements dont Hadrien est responsable au MJS.

Je n'ai pas écris depuis plusieurs semaines, et même si je pourrais dire que j'ai été prise et occupée et je suis partie en vacances etc, je n'ai pas d'excuse et je vais essaer de me rattraper. Mes dernières semaines ont été mouvementées, parce que je suis partie à Savannah et à Charlotte, mais aussi sentimentalement. J'en suis maintenant à 6 semaines du retour, et je sens le stress de cette année si intense s'enrouler et se structurer vers une perspective de fin...

Bonjour à tous !
Une de mes camarades m'a demandé de faire mon portrait pour le yearbook ! :) Voici ce que j'ai écrit (en fait d'un entretien j'ai juste écrit mes pensées sur mon année à tech, en ~500 mots... ^^ )

Finding a single story to tell about my year in Georgia Tech has been harder than I thought. When I arrived on campus in August 2008, I never thought that I would experience half as much as I have. I thought maybe some parts of my trip would be good. But now I know the whole year as an exchange student in Georgia Tech has been memorable. I can recall dozens of stories that have made my life in Tech extraordinary and unforgettable.
I recall how awesome it was to live in the iHouse, having the opportunity to live with incredibly awesome people from all around the globe. It has been so amazing to meet people during coffee hour, being a team at intramurals, participating in International food night and cooking crêpes while a friend cooked Indian curry, another Irish potatoes, or Korean chicken or even boiled bubble tea for everyone! How awesome last semester’s end of semester gala was, with African food, exotic and delicious as always at iHouse, and superlatives –creation of some remarkable iHousers. How when I was named Miss I-party I thought of all the amazing parties that we organized, and the ones we went to. And all the afternoons and nights I just hung out at Delta Sigma Phi with amazing people, and some of my favorite people in the world.
Sitting next to the campanile and thinking of Take Back the Night and how proud I was of the Tech community for raising awareness against sexual violence. Walking on east campus and seeing frat boys throwing empty beer cans at each other, and then stopping to argue about differential equations, completely normally, because both are part of the Tech life. I look fondly on the times I went Ballroom Dancing in the beautiful building that is the CRC, having an incredible sportive experience, going to football games and being stunned by the school spirit and the electric ambiance of games. I am amazed even myself how much I rooted for the team, how proud I was of what how good we did.
I recall all those memories, not one in particular, but all, from the times working at the library until the middle of the night to the people I met, the travels to all of my friends’ places around Atlanta and in neighboring States, road trips and travels to Knoxville, Charleston, New Orleans or Savannah. Or just the day that it snowed four inches and we started a snowball fight and built a Snowman in front of the iHouse. I’ve enjoyed hanging out at Tech and going to field trips with the OIE, and going to museums or to the opera. And everything, from the afternoons at Piedmont Park, to the days when I just went to class and benefited from some of the best teachers in the country.
All of that made this year one of the best years of my life. A real college experience. My life at tech.

J'espère que cela vous donne une idée de l'année extraordinaire que j'ai passé ici :)

Un jour blanc !

Bonjour à tous !!
Aujourdh'ui dimanche 1er Mars 2009 je me suis réveillée sous un paysage enneigé!!! Non pas parce que j'étais en Indiana ou dans le nord, mais bien à Atlanta, dans ma bonne capitale du sud ! Il faisait une température de moins de zéro, et c'est emmitouflée d'un pull, ma veste à capuche en fourrure, un bonnet une écharpe des gants et des bottes que je me suis avanturée jusqu'au CRC pour mon cour de danse!!
C'était magnifique en tout cas, un vrai blizzard, et maintenant tout le paysage est tout blanc !! :)

Bonjour a tous!!!
Je reviens d'un sejour de cinq jours a la nouvelle orleans ou j'ai fete mardi gras de vendredi a jeudi (un long mardi ^^). Je vais bien (meme beaucoup mieux que bien) je suis epuisee et fauchee, mais j'ai profite de ce voyage plus que d'aucun de tout mon sejour ici!
Voila je ne peux pas tout raconter maintenant mais vous aurez tout, la voiture a 8 dans un mini van chevrolet de 1972 et le passage par l'Alabama et le Mississippi et Biloxi et la Nouvelle Orleans et le French Quarter et Tulane et Lucie Martin, bourbon street, et tout le reste, les parades, les beads, les clubs, les seins (partout!) et j'appuirai ca de photo (j'en ai peut etre 150!! ^^).
Voila donc un spoiler assez reussit (j'espere) pour raconter des vacances incroyables (carremet!).

L’auberge Espagnole
L’auberge espagnole is a French film directed by Cedric Klapisch and released in 2003. A box office hit in France and in Europe, the movie follows graduate student Xavier (Romain Duris), as he struggles with a year abroad in “Erasmus” (exchange program) in Spain for his graduate degree in business. In the course of his journey, Xavier meets a series of different characters which nationalities and personalities open his eyes to the complexity of the Europe he lives in. The film received the award for ‘most promising actress’ to Cecile de France, and was nominated for five other awards (best film, best director, best actress in a supporting role for Judith Godrèche, best screenplay and best editing) at the César in 2004.
In order to get a job at the French ministry of Economy, Finance and Industry, Xavier is advised to study a year in Spain to improve his speaking and get a degree in Spanish business. Xavier moves out of his French tranquility, the comfort of his life with a hippy-like mother and feminist girlfriend, and begins applying for a year as an ‘Erasmus’. Erasmus, named after the Dutch traveler of the late 15th century, is also the name of European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students, European student exchange program established in 1987.
Applying, and then obtaining an authorization to leave for a year abroad is, as Xavier says, “a real mess”. It takes quantities of paperwork, three months of bureaucratic detours and other schemes for Xavier to finally take off, in a series of inventive and brilliantly filmed scenes which make the richness of this beautiful movie. Throughout a concourse of circumstances, Xavier starts his year abroad living with a French couple recently moved to Barcelona, and starts looking for apartments while showing the wife (Judith Godrèche) Barcelona, and going to the University of Barcelona where he meets Isabelle (Cecile de France), a homosexual woman who will become his close friend.
Xavier soon moves out of the French couple who put him up for a ‘Spanish apartment’, in which he lives with five (later seven) Europeans. From France, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom, and additionally Belgium, the group is diverse, multicultural and, though European, has to tackle with individual as well as national differences. While at university in Barcelona, Xavier encounters the difficulty of tackling one’s own identity in the midst of a changing and growing European Union. His Catalonian teacher speaks Catalan, and while discussing the issue of language (in France the language taught in schools as ‘Spanish’ is Castilian, not Catalan), and identity Xavier discovers the difficulty of being French or Spanish versus being Gambian or Catalan and at the same time feeling European. At an individual level, tells one of his comrades, one can be Spanish from Catalonia, and at the same time finding his origins in Gambia, and feel as proud of his country as his origins, while at the same time accepting the greater idea of Europe. There is not “one valid identity” but several, “perfectly compatible”.
Living in the Spanish Apartment is full of experiences, but Xavier also encounters some hardships. Living in a community with as many roommates would be hard for anyone (see the examples of the fridge or the phone), but some are hardened by the cultural and language barriers. The language one, when the English girl mistake university in French, ‘fac’, for ‘fuck’, and almost gets mad; or the one of stereotypes, once the seventh roommates moves in. Wendy’s (Kelly Reilly) brother moves in the apartment and brings with him the most basic stereotypes and prejudices. The latter in this movie are portrayed as signs of brutality or sheer ignorance. Amusing at first, when the English boy William (Kevin Bishop) comes in and tells stories of European encounters, imitating accents or generalizing on country characters; they become brutal and almost insulting, when he bothers the German flat mate with his misplaced comments (on order, or referring to the Nazi period). But once the individual’s personalities become prevalent and the flat mates know each other, prejudices do not matter and only individual characters define them.
At the same time, the cultural and intercultural sensitivities are shown as positive experiences, with the coffee shop waiter introducing Xavier to the “real life of Barcelona”, and Xavier’s visits of the city and the surroundings, especially Dali’s architecture and recognizable design.
Leaving Barcelona after months of visits, learning, partying and globally, a yearlong of life-changing experiences, Xavier comes back to Paris to find his job at the ministry of Economy. However upon starting in his new position, it strikes him that he wants to fulfill his boy-dream of being a writer, and starts the book about his foreign experience: L’auberge Espagnole. There the concept of complex identity strikes him again. Studying abroad, meeting all sorts of different people and most especially living in the Spanish apartment makes him realize that as an individual, we are multiple. We are our nationality, our personality, our friends, our experiences, our encounters, the people we meet, the people we love, the people we left behind, and a mixture of everyone in our lives, and ourselves, changed and grown. When he says “l’Europe, c’est un vrai bordel”, Xavier means that Europe shows the complexity of all the identities of Danes, French, Spanish, Italians, German, British, Belgians… intermixed and associated to make one person, rich of all those perspectives and skills.
Erasmus, by permitting a foreign experience and to open students’ eyes to Europe and by giving them the opportunity to talk and understand different cultures has the potential to create a real pan-European identity. It permits a true inter-cultural dialogue and in this is a great opportunity to take even further the construction of a European political unit. Sociologists such as Stefan Wolff have argued that the Erasmus generation will create this identity, because having moved and studied abroad, they will have a truer and more personal perspective of Europe. However, I believe that to move and study abroad you need a certain upbringing, a curiosity to travel, and certain means to afford leaving one’s native country. Therefore even though Erasmus has a great potential, the difficulty of access keeps me from true optimism about its impact on the construction of European identity.
I take out of this story that foreign experience builds one’s character but also helps opening one’s eye to the European Union that they are all part of. After this year the student (here Xavier) knows more about himself, but also about the world that he has been a part of. I think this movie is about finding oneself, knowing who you are and meeting the people who help make you, who are you (as expressed in the last scene). I take home from this movie the conviction that experiencing firsthand is the best way of learning, and it is true for living with roommates as well as traveling as well as building a European Union. Moving, meeting people from everywhere and hearing about their cultural specificities, and what makes their identity, is the first step to relating to people, which is the first step towards a feeling of co-citizenship.

Bonjour à tous !

Quelques nouvelles de ma vie cette semaine.
J'ai passé une heure à danser le Passo Doble avec Daniel (mon partenaire de dance) en Ballroom dimanche. Le Passo Doble est la plus excitante, terrible, ferme et passionnante des danses !! C'est tellement extraordinaire. =) Techniquement, Passo Doble veut dire marche : Le nom paso-doble signifie littéralement "deux pas", probablement parce cette danse est basée sur une simple marche stylisée. Le pas de base est en effet un simple pas de marche (le danseur part du pied droit, la danseuse pied gauche en arrière). La tenue du couple est classique, mais il faut ensuite, pour adopter le style typique du paso, se souvenir que le danseur y joue le rôle du torero et la femme celui de sa cape !!! Ca fait penser à une corrida. C'est assez incroyable. =)
Mardi j'ai passé trois heures à présenter et guider une classe discussion sur Les Femmes et L'Emploi. Ma co-présentatrice et moi avons fait un super travail, et la prof nous a félicitées (! :) )
Après cela en rentrant à la maison je me suis rendue compte que c'était la International Food night ! :) J'ai fait des crèpes, et les autres ont fait des plats depuis les quatre coins du monde (qui savait que le hachis parmentier vient d'irlande? ! en tout ça ça y ressemblait beaucoup ^^)

Mercredi j'ai passé mon midterm de Research Methods, et je pense que je me suis bien débrouillée. Jeudi j'ai été à Galloway à nouveau, et me suis rendu compte que je suis super impliquée à Georgia Closeup, je vais animer un Workshop et présenter un Topical dans la High School Legislative Conference (on Animal Rights) (3 Mars). J'organise et suis cruciale à l'organisation de la Youth Environmental Conference (17-18 Mars). J'ai mon nom comme Interne sur le Hand Out distribué aux élèves. =) Jeudi soir je suis sortie avec Linda Suzie et des amies à Bazaar, un bar branché très sympas à côté du Fox Theater, où nous fêtions une des dernières sorties de Linda, qui pars en Asie (Japon ou Corée elle n'a pas décidé) à la fin du mois (dans une semaine !!! :( ).
Je pars cet après midi pour la nouvelle orléans.

Découverte impromptue

Bonjour à tous !

Un petit message rapide pour parler d'une découverte que je viens de faire, totalement inattendue et complètement géniale et incroyable. Dans le Student Center à tech, entre le Fod Court (Chick-Fil-A, Burger King, pseudo Japonais et pseudo Tex Mex et autres nouritures totalement déséquilibrées) et la salle informatique, le post office et tout un tas d'autres espaces géniaux que recèle le Student Center, j'ai trouvé une salle de musique ! Ok, ça n'a pas l'air incroyable comme ça? laissez moi vous expliquer. Il y a une salle d'environ 50m², avec des canapés (qui ont l'air super comfortable !!) des tables etc où les étudiants peuvent se poser et se reposer, ou travailler (ce que je suis en train de faire), en écoutant de la musique qui sort d'écouteurs de super qualité gérés par un comptoir avec un attendant qui a l'air tout droit sorti d'un disc-shop (tatoos et casquette à l'envers lol). Les murs sont couvers de photos de bob dylan, ben harper ou des rolling stones (entre autres), ou de posters d'AC DC, Nightwish et autres... !!! Les couleurs, sombres et agréables (grises, prune, orange doux) sont reposantes et très douce. Bref, je suis dans un environnement totalement parfait pour me remettre au travail et me remotiver, et je pense que je viens de découvrir une de mes salles préférées dans toute la fac !
Voilà, juste pour dire qu'entre le temps lumineux ensoleillé (et froid) et cette salle, mon moral est à bloc !

I have a dream

Bonjour à tous !

Aujourd'hui, j'ai visité l'Auburn Avenue, le district afro-américain historique d'Atlanta, berceau de la culture afro-américaine de la ville, et lieu de l'enfance de Martin Luther King Jr.

Après la super soirée d'hier soir où l'ihouse a fêté le 21ème anniversaire de Claire, en noir et blanc et en cocktails, ça a été un peu dur de se réveiller à 8h du matin, mais le voyage, organisé par l'OIE, en valait la peine :)
Pour raconter rapidement hier soir nous avons fêté l'anniversaire de l'Irlandaise qui habite au premier étage, avec énormément de résidents de l'iHouse. Tout le monde était sur son 31, en noir et blanc alors qu'elle était en violet :) nous avons bu des Mojitos (+- transparent), du bailey's (+- blanc), des Black & des White Russians, de la guiness (noir), cocktails délicieux préparés par Oskar. Pour commencer elle a fait une chasse au trésor où chacun d'entre nous était/avait un indice et au final a trouvé ses cadeaux offerts par toute la maison. La soirée était extraordinaire, super réussie et tout le monde s'est énormément amusé :)

Le réveil ce matin n'en a pas été plus facile, mais au moins je ne regretterais pas un instant de mon expérience américaine ! :) A 9h je suis donc partie dans le bus de l'OIE pour aller à Auburn Avenue avec une trentaine d'autres étudiants internationaux. Nous avons rejoins une guide qui nous a présenter la rue et l'histoire de la formation d'Atlanta dans les années 1830, la guerre civile et la libération des esclaves, la population, la ségrégation jusqu'aux années 1960, la vie de Martin Luther King Jr (né Michael King!), et des histoires que nous avons déjà entendu comme Rosa Parks et d'autres moins connues comme Alonzo Franklin Herndon fondateur de la première compagnie d'assurance pour les Afro-Américains (Atlanta Life). PArmis ces histoires celles d'un barbier à succès, d'une femme qui a créé le premier (et encore à ce jour le plus grand orphelinat pour les afro-américains des états-unis, et évidemment, Martin Luther King Jr.
Nous avons d'ailleurs passé plus d'une demi heure au visitor center de l'Ebenezer church à regarder des films sur la vie de MLK Jr.
Nous avons finis au Auburn Market, un vrai marché avec des fruits, des légumes, de la viande (en quantités effrayantes), et un vrai poissonier ! :) Et j'ai mangé de la nourriture venant des Carraibes. C'était super, educatif et interessant, et grâce au fait que c'était tôt, il me reste l'après midi pour travailler ! :) Vive Georgia Tech ! :)

A la suite d'un message laissé sur mon blog il y a un certain temps par une connaissance d'Anais, j'ai posté des renseignements sur la Géorgie sur le site Explornation, le guide dont vous êtes le Héro. Une sorte de blog collectif parlant des pays où l'on peut voyager.

Je me suis rendue compte également que je ne vous ai pas beaucoup parlé de la Géorgie.

La Géorgie est un état très typique du Sud des États-Unis. Atlanta, sa capitale, compte entre 519,145 habitants ("intra-muros") et 5,278,904 habitants dans la "grande Atlanta" (Atlanta metropolitan area). C'est la ville qui présente le plus important taux de croissance des États-Unis depuis 2000.
L'histoire de la Géorgie est une des plus riches des états-unis, fondée en 1733, membre des 13 colonies rebellées contre le nord pendant la guerre de sécession (et des 7 originelles), au cœur de la lutte contre la discrimination et la ségrégation pendant les années 1960, la Géorgie est chargée d'histoire. De plus, située entre la Floride, l'océan atlantique, la Caroline du Sud, la Caroline du Nord, le Tennessee et l'Alabama, la Géorgie est un point d'encrage stratégique pour visiter tout le Sud des États-Unis.

Climat

La Géorgie a un climat subtropical humide, qui change très rapidement et soudainement. Les hivers sont peu rigoureux mais humides, les étés sont très chauds et humides.
Le meilleur moment pour partir est sans doute en automne où le temps est généralement très doux et ensoleillé, ou à la fin du printemps/au début de l'été. Les mois de juillet-août sont peu recommandés (très chaud et lourd) de même que février-mars (froid et humide).

Transport

Atlanta, la capitale de la Géorgie, est une ville typiquement américaine, reconstruite et développée en grande partie au début du 20ème siècle, à l'ère des automobiles. Il est assez difficile de se déplacer à Atlanta sans voiture, et le peu de trains rendent difficile l'accès aux autres villes. A Atlanta même, le métro : MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) relie le Nord au Sud et l'Est à l'Ouest à travers deux lignes qui datent des années 1980 et permettent à 451,064 voyageurs de se déplacer chaque jour.
L'aéroport d'Atlanta est le plus fréquenté au monde. Avec 196 portes, il permet le déplacement de 89.4 million de passagers et 994,346 vols par ans (2007). La Géorgie possède 107 aéroports pour l'usage publique.

Visiter

Atlanta est un grand pôle d'activité du pays. Important vestige de la guerre de sécession, ville de Martin Luther King Jr et symbole de la (et de la lutte contre) la ségrégation, mais également symbole du Sud et de la culture Sudiste.
Le nord de la Géorgie est composé de montagnes, avec les Appalaches, qui offre de nombreuses possibilités afin de se promener dans des paysages fantastiques, et de faire des randonnées, ou même du rafting.
Dans le nord, des villes comme Dahlonega sont des vestiges de la ruée vers l'or, avec la possibilité de visiter une mine d'or aujourd'hui à l'abandon.
Sur la côte, des villes comme Savannah offrent des plages et un contre historique adorable.

- La côte géorgienne et ses îles sont un pur régal. Dans le prolongement des deux Carolines et toute aussi belle, elle est néanmoins plus chaude (et plus longtemps dans la belle saison). Savannah est envoûtante, de part son histoire et la préservation de son centre historique. Certainement l’une des villes préférées des américains.
- Le centre d’Atlanta n’est pas au prime abord vraiment très esthétique, mais la “capitale du sud” si vous savez la connaître recelle à la fois d‘endroits très intéressants à visiter, mais aussi de quartiers vastes et extrêmement beaux dans sa périphérie. Certains endroits, comme Stone Mountain ou Buckhead y sont incontournables.
- La guerre de sécession a évidemment marqué les esprits jusqu’à aujourd’hui encore. Les sites géorgiens et les musées sont à la hauteur de la fascination exercée par cette guerre sur les Américains. Si vous vous y intéressez, Stone Mountain, le musée d’histoire à Atlanta, les champs de bataille de Kennesaw et Chickamauga, mais aussi, sur la côte, la ville de Savannah et les forteresses comme Fort Pulaski ou, au centre de l’Etat, la terrible prison d’Andersonville, sont les hauts lieux géorgiens de la guerre de sécession.

Histoire

La Géorgie est fondée en 1733 par les Britanniques pour contrer l'expansionnisme espagnol depuis la Floride, son nom est un hommage au Roi George II de Grande Bretagne. Elle devint ensuite l'une des treize colonies à se révolter contre les Britanniques durant la Guerre d'Indépendance. Elle devient le quatorzième État de l'Union le 2 janvier 1788.
Le 18 janvier 1861 l'État rejoint la Confédération et tient un rôle important durant la Guerre de Sécession.
Le 15 juillet 1870, la Géorgie sera le dernier État à capituler.

Géographie et géologie

D'une surface de 152 577 km², la Géorgie est peuplée de 8 186 453 habitants (en 2000). C'est le plus grand État du pays à l'est du fleuve Mississippi. Le nord de l'État est occupé par le début de la chaîne des Appalaches, le sud est une plaine côtière.
Le sud de la Géorgie est encore très sauvage et peu peuplé.

ça faisait longtemps

Bonjour à tous !
Aujourd'hui, un sujet qui commence à être un peu redondant sur ce blog... je suis malade. Et quand je dis malade je ne veux pas dire que je renifle un peu , mais que j'ai de la fièvre, le nez en vrac, l'estomac retourné, les tempes qui tremblent, j'ai affreusement mal au dos, au ventre, à la tête. Bref, je suis malade.
Pour la première fois depuis la rentrée de printemps, il fait vraiment un temps pourri à Tech. Il pleut, il vente, il fait froid. Il y a encore des inconscients qui se balladent en tshirt et ou en flip flaps (je ne les comprendrais jamais). Mais quand à moi je suis au lit depuis 3h30 de l'après midi (il est presque 9h) j'ai dormi et bu de la soupe hyper brulante ça m'a fait du bien. Mais je me sens toujours comme prisonnière d'un lit de misère...

A part ça je me suis véritablement engagée auprès de Georgia CloseUp, avec un rendez vous ce matin et un prochain le 12 février, pour organiser la conférence Environmentale du 17-18 Mars (en plein spring break ! arg). Pour l'instant, je suis prévue pour organiser un Workshop mais si Maman se décide à venir à Mexico, je ne ferais qu'aider à l'organisation.
Le directeur du programme, Ron Thomas, est hyper interessant, et super enthousiaste. Il m'a totalement adoptée, et je pense que nous allons bientôt parler d'opportunité de rester à Georgia CloseUp cet été (il m'a offert le job pour l'automne, en tant qu'interne pour tout le semestre!, malheureusement il faut que je rentre à Sciences Po en septembre :( ).
Voilà sinon j'ai un essai d'allemand à écrire pour demain mais avec ma fièvre et tout je suis au 36ème dessous, dur de travailler :(

Phase 1 : The high Museum
Bonjour a tous ! Samedi soir etait la college night au High Museum of Atlanta. Le Louvre @ Atlanta, la collection permanente d'art moderne, et surtout, l'exhibition Terra Cotta ( l'armee de terre du Premier Empereur de Chine), une tres (courte) belle exposition.

Les photos etaient interdites mais au gres des trouvailles du net voici ce que nous avons vu :

J'ai appris enormement de choses sur le premier empereur de chine, la guerre a cette epoque, la formation de la chine telle que nous la connaissons aujourd'hui ... et puis je me suis dit que vu les indications des archeologues (ils vont attendre que "les methodes d'archeologies soient plus au point" avant de chercher a entrer dans la tombe principale, celle qui recele la maison et sans doute la depouille du premier empereur) peut etre que les senaristes de la momie 3 n'ont pas si tort. Peut etre qu'il y a quelque chose a craindre de ce tombeau ! peut etre... peut etre qu'ils ont peur?
...
Haha ! Bref, prochaine frayeur : les requins ! A venir : A night at the Aquarium.

Joyeuse Année (chinoise)

Joyeuse nouvelle année chinoise à tous !!

Pour cette nouvelle année (avez vous remarqué combien de nouvelle année il y a dans une année? Une pour les juifs, une pour les chrétiens, une pour les orthodoxes, une pour les chinois... d'autres nouvelles années? ), nous avons mis l'iHouse à la sauce (soja?) orientale ! Samedi, cours de cuisine ! (photos à venir) Nous avons fait des "dumplings", les "raviolis chinois". Et quand je dis nous avons fait, nous avons mis la main à la pâte, au sens propre. Coupé des légumes, carottes, poireaux, champignons, et aussi de la viande, malaxé les ingrédients à mains nues, avec un oeuf cru, soupoudré d'herbes, et fait des boulettes dans de la pâte, collé avec de l'eau, et mis tout ça : à l'étouffé, au ban marie, dans une casserole, dans une poelle, et même au four !

Nous portions tous du rouge (la couleur de la chance et du bonheur) et nous avons passé un super moment tous ensemble à rigoler, les mains dans la pâte à inventer des formes marrantes pour nos raviolis =) (contrairement à l'image super polie que j'ai trouvée online, présente ci dessous).

Aujourd'hui la Coffee Hour est dédiée au nouvel an chinois, c'est à dire le nouvel an Lunaire, les 12 animaux du zodiaque, le fait de s'habiller en rouge, les differentes facons de dire bonne annee et la difference entre chine et coree. La culture chinoise, les parades...
Alors je vous souhaite à tous une super nouvelle année chinoise !!!

Hawks vs Suns

Bonjour à tous !

Dans la série des Braves vs Nationals (baseball), et autres Thrashers vs flyers (hockey), voici les Hawks, l'équibe de basket d'Atlanta =)
Je suis allée à la Phillips Arena, le même lieu où se passait le Hockey, à côté du CNN center et où des milliers de gens sont venus voir les Hawks tenter de battre les Suns de Phoenix, et le grand (trèès grand!) Shaquille O'Neil !

Le rang devant nous avait des signes L-E-T-'-S-G-O-A-T-L-A-N-T-A-H-A-W-K-S criaient très fort et nous ont mis dans une ambiance de fous tout au long du match (nous sommes même passés à la TV du stade :D ). Au final les Suns nous ont battus 102-99 après un match très serré et très excitant, qui nous a tenu en haleine toute la soirée.
Pendant les mi-temps, les danseuses (réputées) et nous ont présenté un show remarquable !

Bref une soirée très agréable !

Le 20 Janvier 2009 : Un jour comme les autres… ou presque ?

Mardi 20 janvier, 9h30. Un jour normal qui commence. Si la veille était un jour férié, troisième lundi du mois de janvier célébrant l’anniversaire de Martin Luther King Junior (né en vérité un 15 janvier, en 1929), le mardi était bien travaillé, même s’il était facile de l’oublier. De nombreux cours étaient annulés, et des classes réservées pour des projections très spéciales. Comment pourrions-nous l’oublier ? Le changement arrive aujourd’hui : avec Barack Obama, à la présidence des États-Unis.

11h, je suis dans le lobby de mon ‘dorm’ lorsqu’un de mes colocataires se précipite sur la télévision, l’allume et monte le son. C’est CNN, mais les commentaires, du moins pour l’instant, ne volent tout de même pas très haut. Quelques stars, des noms célèbres et des figures connues sont en train de s’installer pour assister au passage de pouvoirs. Je lui demande comment cela va se passer, mais il n’en a aucune idée. C'est la première fois que l'investiture du président a un tel poids, et soulève un tel intérêt. Son discours, surtout, est attendu avec impatience. Pour de nombreuses personnes, le changement commence aujourd’hui à 12h. Pour d’autres, quoi qu’il se passe aujourd’hui, Obama n’arrivera pas à être à la hauteur des espérances qu’il soulève.

Malheureusement, sur une erreur de calendrier, une maladresse et je ne sais quoi d’autre, j’avais un entretien pour un stage au moment même de l’inauguration (11h30 – 12h30). Ce qui ne m’a pas empêchée de sentir la fièvre étudiante et médiatique autour de l’évènement. Non seulement de nombreux étudiants de ma connaissance ont fait le voyage jusqu’à Washington (depuis Atlanta, 667 miles / 1073 km!) mais ceux restés ne peuvent pas oublier l’évènement, sur lequel toutes les télévisions du campus sont fixées depuis 11h du matin. Quelle que soit la chaîne ou la couleur politique des commentateurs, Fox (conservateur) ou CNN (plutôt libéral), MSNBC (experts politiques) ou New York Times live sans commentaires, chacun en a pour son goût. L’écran géant du Student Center, les télévisions dans les cafétérias, les student lounges, en projection dans certaines salles de classes, et même projeté dans le « Success Center » où se tenait mon entretien…

Lorsque mon entretien se fini, je me précipitais dans la salle de classe où le directeur de l’école de Public Policy (affaires publiques) et une petite dizaine d’étudiants regardaient la fin des discours. La scène est extraordinairement américaine : quelques pizzas, du coca-cola (Atlanta en est la capitale), et des cookies au glaçage bleu-blanc-rouge (avec un peu plus de bleu, la couleur des démocrates), adorablement patriotique à leur manière. Sur l’écran, la foule commença à se disperser, Obama à se diriger vers la parade, puis George Bush pris l’hélicoptère. Direction, le Texas. Une demi-minute de silence plus tard, le président de l’association des étudiants lâche : c’est une des meilleures images de Bush que j’ai vu depuis longtemps. Toute la classe éclate de rire. Apparemment, la réaction a été presque la même partout, avec des éclats de joies, de rires, des applaudissements et un grand soulagement à l’idée que, finalement, on arrive à bout de ces 8 ans de néo-conservatisme interventionniste et agressif.

D’un autre côté mon entretien n’était pas le seul à se tenir au moment de l’inauguration, des dizaines d’étudiants attendaient avec moi, pour d’autres entretiens, d’autres compagnies dont les représentants étaient tout autant privés d’inauguration étaient venus en masse pour cette série d’entretiens organisés par l’école… Et quelques heures plus tard, en classe, j’ai entendu quelques uns de mes camarades américains rigoler qu’ils ne savaient même pas que l’inauguration avait lieu ce jour là. Malgré le libéralisme relatif d’Atlanta, la Géorgie est un état Républicain, et si l’inauguration a été une grande bouffée d’air pour des millions de personnes, ce n’est pas cela qui va modifier les habitudes de la plupart des habitudes des ingénieurs de Georgia Tech. Quelques T-shirts d’Obama plus présents que les autres jours, des textos extatiques et des status Facebook enthousiastes, sont parmi les signes les plus révélateurs de l’intérêt étudiant américain pour la politique.

Alors, le 20 janvier ‘09, un jour comme les autres ? Pour de nombreux étudiants, peut être… Mais après avoir regardé, lu, redis le discours d’Obama, je me dis qu’il y a une chance pour que ce jour somme toute assez banal, fasse une grande différence. J’ai l’espoir, à vrai dire même la conviction, que cette inauguration somme toute assez exceptionnelle a soulevé des questions, posé un précédent, pour les quatre ans à venir. Le précédent d’une nouvelle présidence. Un président humain, qui est nerveux et bafouille, qui est passionné. Un discours rassembleur, tourné vers la foi tout en incluant les non-croyants, le passé avec de nombreuses référence au passé américain, tout en s’adressant aux générations futures, patriote, tout en tendant la main vers l’extérieur…

Seul l’avenir nous dira si ces espoirs trouveront satisfactions. Mais à mon avis, le 20 janvier 2009 n’a pas été un jour comme les autres. Je m’en souviendrais, je l’espère, longtemps.

My fellow citizens,

I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.

Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents.

So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.

That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.

These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land — a nagging fear that America's decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.

Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.

We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.

In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted — for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things — some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.

For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.

For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth.

For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sahn.

Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.

This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions — that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.

For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act — not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. All this we will do.

Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions — who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage.

What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them— that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works — whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account — to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day — because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.

Nor is the question before us whether the market is a force for good or ill. Its power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched, but this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control — and that a nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous. The success of our economy has always depended not just on the size of our Gross Domestic Product, but on the reach of our prosperity; on the ability to extend opportunity to every willing heart — not out of charity, but because it is the surest route to our common good.

As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake. And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and we are ready to lead once more.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort — even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan. With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.

For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.

To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West — know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.

To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world's resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.

As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. We honor them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves. And yet, at this moment — a moment that will define a generation — it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all.

For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.

Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends — honesty and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism — these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility — a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.

This is the source of our confidence— the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.

So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled. In the year of America's birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. Deuxième semaine du deuxième semestre

Bonjour à tous !!
J'ai un million de choses (et demi) à vous raconter. Malheureusement me connaissant vous vous doutez que je suis dé-bor-dée. Surtout parce que je suis incapable de d'organiser mes priorités. Il faut que je fasse des devoirs d'allemands, que je lise des bouquins de public policy, d'affaire internationale (la naissance d'une culture européenne?), des articles de méthodes, de recherche et sur le mouvement étudiant en 1968 (tiens, ça me dis quelque chose, ça...), et en plus de ça il faut que je me mette sérieusement à chercher un job pour cet été, j'ai été aujourd'hui à une "career fair" catastrophique. Finalement, je me suis engagée comme volontaire pour aider des enfants de La Amistad à faire leur devoir (école élémentaire), et je suis tous les soirs de la semaine à Delta Sigma Phi pour les aider pendant la Rush Week. Et puis je me suis prise d'amour pour la série télévisée GREEK que je regarde dès que j'ai une minute, ce qui me prend il faut l'avouer pas mal de temps. Je suis chroniquement incapable de m'endormir avant une heure du matin mais il est très dur de faire quoi que ce soit de productif après 11h du soir si je n'ai pas un devoir précis à rendre, quant au matin impossible d'imaginer me lever avant 10h. Pas que je rate grand chose, car mon premier cours de la journée est à 13h30.
Je passe une heure et demi trois fois par semaine à la gym (bonne résolutions du nouvel an tenues au moins une semaine !! yay), il faut que j'achète des nécessaires pour la salle de bain, et entre tout cela nous avons les réunions et les activités de l'iHouse.
Bref, il faut que j'écrive sur mon blog, et que je vous appelle, entre autres 50 choses qu'il faut que je fasse.
Mais ça, promis, je m'y mets très vite.

If nothing is done soon, the bluefin tuna will disappear from the Mediterranean

IF EVER there were a graphic illustration of the tragedy of the commons, it is the plummeting of the world’s stocks of bluefin tuna. Because they live in the high seas, these fish belong to everyone, and are thus no one’s responsibility. The result is that the bluefin has been doomed to decades of poor management.

Matters, though, appear to be reaching a crisis. In a study to be published soon in Conservation Letters, a group of scientists led by Brian MacKenzie, of the Technical University of Denmark, describe how they ran a computer model of the species’s population dynamics. Their conclusion is that even if fishing for bluefin were banned, the population in the north-east Atlantic and Mediterranean will probably collapse. The current management plan, to reduce quotas gradually over the next 15 years, will cause it to fall so far that bluefins in the area will qualify as critically endangered, the highest category of risk in the lexicon of conservation.

The organisation charged with changing that state of affairs is the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), based in Madrid. However a measure of its success is suggested by its nickname, the “International Conspiracy to Catch All Tunas”. Indeed, things are so bad that a recent review by a group of outside experts appointed by ICCAT itself concluded that the management of the bluefin was “widely regarded as an international disgrace”.

Joseph Powers, a fisheries scientist at Louisiana State University who has been involved with ICCAT for a long time, says that, for the most part, the organisation’s scientists agree with Dr MacKenzie. The evidence, he says, is clear. The quotas handed out by ICCAT have been around 30,000 tonnes a year. The science suggests they should have been 15,000 tonnes. The management plan calls for them to be reduced to 25,500 tonnes by 2010. Yet, in practice, around 50,000-60,000 tonnes of fish are landed because even legal catches are not properly monitored, and there is a thriving illegal fishery too.

The reason is that like any international organisation, ICCAT is little more than the sum of its member states. The office in Madrid is a secretariat that compiles statistics and organises scientific advice. It is not responsible for management. The real work is done at meetings of ICCAT’s 46 members, where fisheries science collides with political horse-trading. At the next meeting, from 17th to 24th November, in Marrakech, the impending crisis will be the main item on the agenda. Fábio Hazin, chairman of ICCAT, says better management has been implemented but warns that scientific advice must be heeded.

Environmentalists have taken hope from a resolution passed at September’s meeting of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the organisation which, among other things, hands out labels such as “critically endangered”. Most countries, including Spain (an important tuna-fishing nation) and Japan (the main buyer of bluefin), voted in favour of a moratorium on catching the species, followed by improved management and control measures. However, what is said in the open at an environmental meeting may be different from what is done behind the closed doors of ICCAT’s meeting. Britain, for example, voted in favour of the moratorium, but its delegation to Marrakech plans only to ask for “quotas based on science”.

In a similar vein, one of ICCAT’s most important participants, the European Union, said on October 28th that it would “champion bold and decisive measures”. But all it is offering in practice is to attempt to “resolve the issue of overcapacity, reduce the length of the fishing seasons, and identify specific measures that can reinforce control throughout the market chain”. A spokeswoman for the EU’s fisheries directorate said the negotiations would respect scientific advice but would also take into account the positions of “stakeholders and NGOs”, and added that a moratorium would mean “despair for Italian, Spanish and French fishermen”. ICCAT, she added, “works very well”.

Andy Rosenberg, a fisheries scientist at the University of New Hampshire who is one of Dr MacKenzie’s fellow authors, explains that member nations of ICCAT such as Italy, Spain and France allow their fishermen to go on fishing despite the fact that they belong to an international body that is supposed to have agreed on conservation measures. And Dr Powers says if ICCAT’s members cannot both enforce the rules and accept that the quotas need to be small, then a complete moratorium “may be the best way forward”.

ICCAT, which was created in 1969, is one of the oldest of what are known as the regional fisheries-management organisations. Then, bluefin tuna were so abundant that they were found throughout the North Sea and the Baltic, as well as in the Mediterranean. If this is an organisation that is working well, it is hard to imagine what failure would look like.

SIX years of relentlessly rising prices have showered the oil industry with record profits even as whipsawing energy costs have left many Americans alternately furious and baffled.

Now that the roller coaster ride appears to be screeching to a halt, one corporate giant remains confident it can weather the slowdown and uncertainty better than its rivals.

“It’s not that we like lower prices, but our competitive advantage is more obvious to people in a low-price environment,” says Rex W. Tillerson, the chairman and chief executive of Exxon Mobil, the world’s largest, mightiest oil company. “But in a high-price environment, our competitive advantage has been quite evident as well.”

However undaunted Exxon feels, it’s still facing more complicated scenarios than mere price shifts. It’s straining to adjust to a host of potentially seismic issues that raise pointed questions about its long-term strategy. Oil reserves are harder to find, resource-rich governments have become more assertive, and global warming concerns have spurred forceful calls to action on environmental matters.

Moreover, with the election of Barack Obama, a new chapter is about to open for the nation’s energy policy. Mr. Obama says he wants to move away from oil dependence, and his policies are likely to emphasize conservation, alternative energy sources and new limits on the emissions of greenhouse gases responsible for climate change.

The question for Exxon, which Mr. Obama repeatedly singled out as an exemplar of corporate greed during the presidential campaign, is whether the model that has served the company so well for so long will keep it competitive — or whether it will still be producing hydrocarbons long after the world has moved away from dirty fuels.

Last year, Exxon, which is based in Irving, Tex., celebrated its 125th anniversary, marking a straight line that connects it to John D. Rockefeller’s original Standard Oil Trust before the government broke up the enterprise. While other oil companies try to paint themselves greener, Exxon’s executives believe their venerable model has been battle-tested. The company’s mantra is unwavering: brutal honesty about the need for oil and gas to power economies for decades to come.

“Over the years, there have been many predictions that our industry was in its twilight years, only to be proven wrong,” says Mr. Tillerson. “As Mark Twain said, the news of our demise has been greatly exaggerated.”

FROM a purely financial standpoint, there’s no doubt that Exxon’s business strategy has paid off. Despite the broader economic turmoil, Exxon is worth around $375 billion — more than General Electric, Bank of America and Google combined — making it the world’s largest corporation.

Its balance sheet is pristine and its credit rating is better than that of most governments. If Exxon’s revenue were stacked against the world’s G.D.P.’s, it would rank between Austria and Greece as the 26th-largest economy. As oil prices peaked this summer, the company once again set a record as the most profitable American corporation, earning $14.8 billion in the third quarter. Since 2004 alone, the company has rung up profits of about $180 billion.

Throughout its various incarnations — the Standard Oil Trust, Standard Oil of New Jersey, the Exxon Corporation, and now Exxon Mobil — the company has been an ambiguous fascination for many Americans. It is an enduring icon, as lasting as Coca-Cola or General Electric, but also a perennial corporate villain, one that reminds the nation of its dependence on hydrocarbons.

For some, the environmental impact of that earnings gusher outweighs the financial gains.

“Being Exxon is never having to say you’re sorry,” says Kert Davies, the research director at Greenpeace, the environmental advocacy group that has battled with Exxon for years.

On the financial front, however, Exxon’s jaw-dropping results have continued to leave many analysts beaming.

“It’s the world’s greatest company, period,” says Arjun N. Murti, a Goldman Sachs oil analyst. “I would put Exxon up against any other company at any other period of time.”

“It is also the most misunderstood company in the world,” he adds. “For many people, the image of Exxon is the Exxon Valdez. But there is much more to Exxon than that. Somehow, Exxon has persevered over the past 100 years with the best culture and management team any company could have.”

What might be called the Exxon Way can be summed up in three ideals: discipline, patience and long-term vision. It is a formula the company drills into its managers from the moment they join Exxon, and which it keeps repeating through their careers. It explains the company’s resilience and its view that it has survived, and thrived, through countless commodity cycles.

“We are all homegrown,” Mr. Tillerson says. “That happens through a very deliberate and very closely managed process, and it starts the day the person walks through the door with us. And we are the product of that system. If there is a DNA it is something you grow into after many years of working with your colleagues. It is clearly the defining strength of the company.”

TAKE a room full of oil managers, and the Exxon people usually stand out, even as they try not to draw much attention to themselves. They typically band together, and often cultivate an aura of secrecy — and sometimes superiority — toward the outside world.

At Exxon, the engineers rule. From its very early days, the company has focused relentlessly on one thing: finding more ways to squeeze every penny out of each barrel of oil.

Mr. Rockefeller was an accountant who was obsessed with efficiency, and his fixations still run through the company’s veins, says Joseph Allen Pratt, a historian and management professor at the University of Houston. Mr. Pratt is writing the fifth volume of Exxon’s official corporate history, which the company is partly financing.

“There definitely is an Exxon way,” Mr. Pratt says. “This is John D. Rockefeller’s company, this is Standard Oil of New Jersey, this is the one that is most closely shaped by Rockefeller’s traditions. Their values are very clear. They are deeply embedded. They have roots in 100 years of corporate history.”

But the company’s DNA goes well beyond the surface. Rivals acknowledge its expertise around an oil field, even as they bristle at what they call arrogance. Exxon’s own executives brag that their company outperforms its peers by sticking to their playbook.

“Exxon is a very professional company,” says Jeroen van der Veer, the chief executive of a leading competitor, Royal Dutch Shell.

Others say they respect the company’s clarity of vision. “People know the rules when they work with Exxon,” said a top oil executive who asked not to be identified in order not to jeopardize his company’s relationship with Exxon. “Exxon can pick its battles. It’s a pretty good strategy to have if people know that you will fight to the bitter end.”

Examples of such grit abound. After a dispute with the Venezuelan government, during which Exxon persuaded a British court to briefly freeze $12 billion in government assets to fight what it considered an expropriation, the country’s oil minister accused the company of “legal terrorism.”

Whatever its critics might say about the company’s hard-headedness, it has paid off in Exxon’s bottom line. Last year, Exxon’s profit per barrel was $17, exceeding BP’s $12 a barrel, Shell’s $14 and Chevron’s $16, according to Neil McMahon, a Bernstein Research analyst.

No one is apologetic at Exxon about what it takes to get those results, especially Mr. Tillerson.

“The business model is based on a disciplined and rigorous approach to dealing with scientific data and facts,” he says. “What we do is largely invisible to the public. They see the nozzle at the pump, and that’s about it. They don’t see the enormous level of risk that is managed very well to get that gallon of gas.”

Exxon has battled powerful forces in recent years, locking horns with governments and multinational rivals from Africa to Central Asia, from Eastern Europe to South America. But last spring, the challenge struck closer to home — at the company’s annual shareholder meeting in Dallas.

As oil prices zoomed above $100 a barrel, a group of investors tried to force Exxon to lay out a new strategy for developing alternative fuels and addressing global warming. While the challenge was not unprecedented — raucous shareholder meetings have been a staple for years — the dissent was led by a symbolic, if slightly quixotic, constituency: descendants of Mr. Rockefeller, who founded Standard Oil in 1882.

“Exxon Mobil needs to reconnect with the forward-looking and entrepreneurial vision of my great-grandfather,” said Neva Rockefeller Goodwin, a Tufts University economist, speaking for the family. The company, she added at the time, was focused “on a narrow path that ignores the rapidly shifting energy landscape around the world.”

Exxon’s top managers easily brushed off the Rockefeller revolt, as they have so many obstacles over the years. Even so, Exxon and the other oil giants are facing a stark new landscape.

High prices have meant stratospheric profits, of course, but they have also led to more restrictions on access to oil fields around the world, making it harder for companies to increase their production and replace reserves.

“The largest oil companies are under tremendous pressure,” said Fadel Gheit, a veteran oil analyst at Oppenheimer & Company, who worked for the Mobil Corporation before moving to Wall Street.

In the 1960s, the so-called Seven Sisters oil companies, including Exxon and Mobil, controlled most of the world’s oil reserves. Today, state-owned companies, like Saudi Aramco, hold the vast majority of these reserves, while other resource holders like Russia and Venezuela have become increasingly assertive about limiting access to their reserves.

“The problem is very real,” said Henry Lee, a lecturer in energy policy at Harvard University. “The oil majors are looking at a very different world than 20 years ago. That has big implications for the future of these companies. They all know it and they are all trying to figure out where they are going to be in 10 and 20 years.”

The threat from state-controlled energy companies — and the larger question of tapping reserves — led to the big wave of industry mergers in the late 1990s, including Exxon’s $81 billion purchase of Mobil in 1999.

“We were worried,” says Lou Noto, the former chairman of Mobil. “We expected the environment to become more volatile, and more competitive, and more difficult geographically and geologically. The easy stuff had been found and we were getting into very esoteric stuff.”

While the combination of Exxon and Mobil created the world’s most valuable oil company, the joint entity has struggled to expand production. Exxon derives its strength from its size. But its problems are also a function of size: the company has become so large that to grow it must find increasingly big projects.

At an analyst meeting on Wall Street in March, Mr. Tillerson acknowledged the difficulty he faces: “The challenge we have today is continuing to have access to resources.”

Since 1999, Exxon has spent about $125 billion foraging for new energy supplies around the globe. It expects to spend $25 billion to $30 billion each year through 2012 to seek and develop hydrocarbons. Yet the company is pumping about as much oil and gas today as Exxon and Mobil once did separately. In fact, Exxon’s hydrocarbon production has been falling recently, dropping 8 percent, to 3.6 million barrels a day in the third quarter, compared with 3.9 million barrels a day in the period last year.

With about $37 billion in cash and a clean balance sheet, Exxon can afford to be picky about what prospects to explore. It has about 120 projects on its books, either in operation or in the planning stages, and it sits on up to 72 billion barrels of oil and gas reserves around the world, the most of any nonstate oil company.

To keep up momentum, Exxon plans to start up more than 60 fields or major projects by 2011, including dozens of offshore fields in West Africa, export terminals for liquefied natural gas in the Middle East, and scores of gas and oil developments in Australia, Indonesia, the United States and the Caspian Sea.

Still, despite its ability to stride the energy world like a colossus, Exxon remains more cautious than its rivals. Rather than overspend, it sows its huge returns in-house through share buybacks and large dividend payments to shareholders.

From 2003 to the third quarter of 2008, the company has paid out nearly $150 billion to shareholders — spending over $40 billion in dividends and buying back about $110 billion worth of shares.

Yet Exxon’s shares are on track for their worst performance since the early 1980s, a result of the market sell-off and the drop in oil prices recently. Some analysts also said it reflected the questions hanging over the company’s long-term strategy. “Exxon is a cash machine, and they could be using that cash to invest in clean technologies that would expand their base,” said Andy Stevenson, an energy analyst at the Natural Resources Defense Council. “Right now, they have no growth story. They are trapped in oil and gas.”

IF Exxon maintained its current buyback rate of $8 billion each quarter, it would become a private corporation between 2020 and 2030, according to a report by Bernstein Research. While that’s unlikely, these payouts — $30 billion so far this year — have been criticized by some experts, who would like to see the company invest more to increase its production or expand its reserves.

“If a company is not replacing reserves, and they are spending their cash to buy back their shares, and they are not growing their production, that is called liquidating the company,” says Amy Myers Jaffe, the associate director of Rice University’s energy program in Houston.

Ultimately, the biggest test for Exxon’s long-term business model is the fact that rising energy use — whether in the United States or in China — will eventually have to be reconciled with reducing carbon emissions and finding low-carbon energy sources. But as its contentious shareholder meeting with the Rockefeller heirs demonstrated, few topics are as touchy as Exxon’s stance on climate change.

During the tenure of Lee R. Raymond, who ran the company from 1993 to 2005, Exxon became the lightning rod in the debate about climate change. Throughout the 1990s, the company was vilified by environmental groups and scientists for questioning the impact of human activities — especially the use of fossil fuels — on global warming.

Gingerly, over the last three years, Exxon has moved away from its extreme position. It stopped financing climate skeptics this year, and has sought to soften its image with a $100 million advertising campaign featuring real company executives, scientists and managers. One of the ads said the company aimed to provide energy “with dramatically lower CO2 emissions.”

The company has acknowledged that climate change is a risk to the world. In a speech given before the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London last year, Mr. Tillerson said policy makers should consider setting a carbon tax or a plan that limits carbon emissions through a cap-and-trade system.

But while Exxon is slowly unshackling itself from Mr. Raymond’s stance on global warming, it remains faithful to his legacy by dismissing most green alternatives and sticking with hydrocarbons. Although the company’s tone has changed, its strategy has not. Despite growing pressures on oil companies to invest in alternative energy, Exxon’s long-term view remains unapologetically tied to fossil fuels.

“Rex looks more approachable than his predecessor,” says a rival executive who requested anonymity because he did not want to jeopardize his relationship with Mr. Tillerson, “but he is more inflexible.”

Exxon’s belief is that as populations expand and economies grow in developing countries, they will aspire to the comforts and amenities taken for granted in industrialized nations, and this will mean more cars on the roads — and more oil to power them.

According to Exxon’s own outlook, global oil demand is set to reach 116 million barrels a day by 2030, up sharply from 86 million barrels a day today.

Meanwhile, renewable fuels, like solar, wind and biofuels, will grow at a brisk pace but they will account for just 2 percent of the world’s energy supplies by then, according to Exxon, while oil, gas and coal will represent 80 percent of global energy needs by 2030.

“For the foreseeable future — and in my horizon that is to the middle of the century — the world will continue to rely dominantly on hydrocarbons to fuel its economy,” Mr. Tillerson says.

For the moment, Exxon does not see much business sense in investing in solar, as BP has, or wind, like Shell, or geothermal, like Chevron. Like many oil executives, Mr. Tillerson also has little sympathy for corn-based ethanol, which he once derisively referred to as “moonshine.”

Exxon does not entirely close the door to alternative investments someday. But its previous forays into renewable fuels — it was a big investor in nuclear power, synthetic fuels and solar energy in the 1970s — are seen as a costly lesson.

“Being first in something is not necessarily the best position to be in,” Mr. Tillerson says. “You can be more profitable for your shareholders by coming at a later stage.”

Still, Exxon sees itself as a technology-based company. Its labs are developing a thin-film battery separator and an onboard hydrogen system that could increase the range of electric cars or make the current internal combustion engines much more efficient.

The company points out that it has invested more than $1.5 billion to improve its own energy use and cut carbon emissions since 2004. And it boasts that it is spending $100 million to finance a long-term research program at Stanford University, along with General Electric, Toyota and the oilfield-services company Schlumberger, to find ways to increase energy supplies while reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases.

But to many of the company’s critics, these measures look like a convenient smoke screens.

“That’s kind of laughable,” says Mr. Davies of Greenpeace. “What Exxon is clearly saying is that we are addicted to oil.”

THE biggest area where Exxon may have an impact in tackling climate change is in what the industry calls carbon capture and sequestration. Most climate experts say that combating global warming will involve preventing heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide from being spewed into the atmosphere by capturing them and pumping them underground.

In May, Exxon said it would invest $100 million in a demonstration plant in Wyoming to test a new cryogenic technology to capture carbon dioxide by freezing it. Managing these flows, and reducing the costs of this prohibitively expensive technology, may ultimately create a new business for Exxon if it can apply it to large emission sources, like coal-fired power plants.

But for the company to see this as a large-scale opportunity would require a “cultural leap,” Ms. Jaffe says.

“Exxon may wind up being the carbon sequestration king, by accident,” she says.

Whatever shape Exxon’s business model takes, analysts say it is unlikely that the company will get there quietly.

“They are tough, and they have the reputation of being an unyielding company,” says Michelle Michot Foss, who heads the Center for Energy Economics at the University of Texas at Austin. “But it’s a tough business. They are criticized for being too conservative. But they are very patient, and probably in the long term that pays off.”

Background: Aldo Leopold’s “learning to think like a mountain” has been treated as a central idea of Adaptive Management in this class. This powerful simile encourages us to “model” problems on multiple scales of time and space. As he reconsidered his game management policies, Leopold was forced to “expand his model” in time and extent to include additional elements (vegetative loss and erosion of the mountainside). Sixty years after Leopold’s death, environmental problems appear as trouble in larger and larger systems. The idea of this exam essay will be for you to sketch the main elements of Leopold’s “model expansion” as an example of Adaptive Management, apply this model to an environmental problem of your choice, and then to ask yourself: If Leopold were alive today, how would he further expand the model of the “mountain” to include also the atmosphere as an even larger and normally slower-changing system? As in the midterm, your essay will be guided by several questions.

Part I: Learning to Think Like a Mountain
1. Sketch briefly (about 1 page) the key ideas Aldo Leopold evoked in his famous simile, “learning to think like a mountain.” (8 points)
2. Introduce an environmental problem that exemplifies important economic and ecological concerns and use the ideas of Leopold, to analyze that problem and introduce remedies for it. (Note: Here, I mean for you to be inclusive in that I take “the ideas of Leopold” to include later accretions to, and interpretations of, those ideas introduced in class readings and discussions, such as “adaptive management,” “sustainability,” and “hierarchy theory.” (about 2-3 pp.) We will discuss in class how to choose an environmental problem for this purpose. (12 points)

Part II: Learning to Think Like an Atmosphere
Background: Whereas Leopold’s discussion of hunters, deer, wolves, vegetation and mountains emphasized the ECOLOGICAL SCALE (and derivative and local effects on the “geological time scale” such as erosion), today we face an environmental problem that seems to require that we focus more directly on the geological time scale as it applies to the geological/evolutionary time-scale AND EFFECTS UNFOLDING AT THE PHYSICAL SCALE OF THE GLOBAL ATMOSPHERE.
1. Using the ideas you have sketched in question I, above, discuss whether/how Leopold’s idea of learning to think like a mountain, and the associated expansion of his analysis to a larger and more appropriate scale in a hierarchical system can provide us with guidance in “learning to think like an atmosphere.”
2. Discuss, based on your discussion in II.1, what policies you feel would be most appropriate in addressing the threat of climate change.
(I have not provided suggested lengths for these sub-questions because I won’t be surprised if there is a lot of variation regarding whether to concentrate on 1. Or 2.

Question II, as a whole, will be graded on a basis of 10 points. 2-3 pages would be appropriate length for your answer to the two taken together.)

Un week end au calme... et au champagne

Bonjour à tous !!

Le message avant le précédent concerne l'état d'Indiana, et ce parce que... j'y ai passé quatre jours. Les Tapiero m'ont invitée à passer Thankgiving avec eux en famille et j'ai bien fait d'accepter car j'ai passé un super week end. Après ma présentation sur Tchernobyl le mercredi matin (au fait j'ai présenté la Monoculture et Tchernobyl, j'ai eu deux A en Pubp3315: Environmental Policy & Politics avec un 94,5% et un 9/10 et un A en Inta4040: International Environmental Politics avec 90%), je me dépéchée de retrouver Michael qui m'a accompagnée à l'aéroport où j'ai pris le 4:15pm pour Indianapolis. J'ai fait mon check-in en ligne et c'était tellement facile je ne sais pas pourquoi il y a toujours des comptoirs à l'aéroport ;) ^^
Dan et Jacques sont venu me chercher à l'aéroport, Jos nous attendait à la maison, Yoanna qui habite Indianapolis mais avait un diner et Deborah qui venait de Santa Monica nous ont rejoint le lendemain.

J'ai passé quatre jours exceptionnels chez les Tapiero qui ont une magnifique maison dans le nord d'Indinapolis, dans une section (groupement de superbe maisons autour d'un petit lac et au sein d'une enceinte gardée ) appelée Windemere qui abritait aussi plusieurs amis de Dan et comportait quelques maisons qui ont commencé à se décorer pour Noel pendant mon séjour. J'ai pu partager leur diner, beaucoup de champagne, ainsi qu'un week end en famille vraiment agréable. Jeudi midi fut Thanksgiving et les Tapiero accueuillaient une dizaine d'expatriés français ou suisses

travaillant pour la plupart chez Lily avec Jacques. Le déjeuner de Thanksgiving était préparé entièrement par Jos (et délicieux!),

et arrosé de Caipirinias et de Champagne nous a tenu pleins jusqu'au lendemain !!

Nous avons profité du Vendredi pour faire du shopping. Le vendredi après thanksgiving (qui est toujours un Jeudi) est le "Black Friday", c'est un jour de soldes monstres, tout le monde va faire du shopping, et malgré la crise les magasins étaient super bondés !!! Nous avons été dans un mall et j'en ai profité pour m'offrir un col roulé Banana Republic, des sous vetements Victoria's Secret et commencer mes cadeaux de Noel ^^
En parlant de Noel on en parle depuis le lendemain d'Halloween mais vraiment tout le monde est devenu fou depuis que Thanksgiving est passé! On voit des décorations à chaque coin de rue, entend des chorales, voit les vitrines prêtes pour Noel et même pour les 10 ans à venir ^^ Example aujourd'hui à Atlantic Station :

Le Vendredi soir soir nous sommes allés diner chez Miyagi superbe restaurant Japonais, puis Samedi nous nous sommes promenées avec les filles dans les villes alentours, nous avons été dans des magasins super et surtout un Vintage Shop extra cool,n et j'ai acheté des cadeaux de remerciement pour les Tapiero. Nous avons aussi commencé à regarder Georgia Tech battre UGA (YAY!!!) dans notre dernier match de football, et évidemment avons passé du temps à boire du champagne à chaque occasion (et il y en a eu beaucoup ! ^^), nous avons pris l'apéro chez Yoanna qui a un superbe appartement (pas studio, vrai 2 pièces !!! ^^),
Pour couronner le tout en se levant le dimanche matin le paysage était blanc couvert de neige, quelques centimètres mais qui donnaient un vrai air de Noel plus encore que les rennes de lumières artificiels qui bougent du voisin dingue de l'esprit de Noel !! ^^

Finalement après une superbe paéla le dimanche midi, à faire palir mon propre père que j'imagine d'ici proposer de faire la compétition avec Jacques pour vérifier qui fait la meilleure avec le plus de rajouts (Jacques : scampis, mini-calamars, poisson, clams et autres petites merveilles cachées dans le riz à l'espagnole...! )

les filles et moi avons regardé Breakfast at Tiffany's dans leur salle de cinéma perso dans le Basement (incroyablement génial digne du meilleure des rêves Chneiweiss!!. Dan et moi sommes rentrés par le 6:42pm delayed à 7:30pm non 7:45pm non 8:15pm arrivé vers 9h45 à Atlanta au lieu de 8h10!!
Au final j'ai passé un week end à rire, me promener, regarder des films, ainsi qu'à dormir jusqu'à 11h du matin presque tous les jours.

C'était génial.

Je n'arrive pas à croire que j'ai à nouveau fait déshonneur à mes résolutions et je n'ai pas écrit depuis des semaines. Dans les dernières semaines, le plus important a bien sur été Thanksgiving, et avant cela une soirée de l'iHouse ExoticFood et une après midi Thanksgiving (une semaine avant).

Vendredi 21 novembre le hall council nous a invité à une soirée nouriture exotique et nous avons bénéficié de nouriture Thai venant d'un traiteur, nouriture épicée et délicieuse, des nems, Tofu Curry, poulet aux épices, Asperges 'hot sauce', riz et nouilles de riz, et autres déliciosités accompagnés de thé asiatique et de thé vert (+++ ^^).

Ce diner a réunit plusieurs d'entre nous à l'ihouse et c'était vraiment un moment très agréable.
Le soir même, après avoir organiser l'anniversaire de Joseph Byrne, mon voisin de chambre, lui avoir acheté un gateau et du Bailey's et partager des cocktails avec presque tout mon étage, nous sommes allés faire la fête.
Pour la première fois, je suis allé chez PIKE (pi kappa epsilon) quia mauvaise réputation sans que qui que ce soit soit sur de quoi que ce soit. Des rumeurs court sur un viol, des traffics de drogues, des mises en examen et des mises à l'épreuve de la fraternité pour deux ans (vérifié). Cependant étant donné que presque toutes les fraternités ont été mises à l'épreuve au moins une fois, Lambda Chi et Delta Sig ayant même été virées du campus au début des années 2000 (et revenues après une mise à l'épreuve) et accompagnée de trois grands garçons prêts à me défendre, nous sommes allés à la shot party que PIKE offrait.La soirée était très réussie, révolvant autour du thème "hollywood", où chaque chambre était un film. Je me suis vraiment énormément amusée, et des tas d'amis à moi nous ont retrouvés à la soirée, Elena et Oskar, James, Erin et Kumar, et finalement Aaron (delta sig) avec qui j'ai passé toute la fin de soirée. Je suis finalement rentrer chez moi vers 4h du matin prête à fêter Thanksgiving le lendemain à la fête de l'ihouse...

...que j'ai presque raté!! Réveillée par Cristina et Callie à 16h, j'ai du tomber du lit immédiatement devant mon assiette pour un repas de Thanksgiving qui commencait à 15h (alors que je croyais que ça commençait à 18h!! ^^).
J'ai tout de même pu profiter d'un super repas de Thanksgiving! Le repas était super j'ai partagé cette expérience avec tous mes amis, docteur Bowman a joué au Basketball avec les garçons, et une fois tout rangé et en passe d'être nettoyé m'a même remercié en disant que j'étais toujours là pour aider et c'était pour cela que l'on m'aimait autant à l'ihouse!! :)
La journée s'est super bien passé, et après un peu de procrastinage et quelques films j'ai même pu travailler sur mes présentations, sur la Monoculutre du cacao, la Déforestation et Tchernobyl.
De plus le dimanche nous avons eu la dernière lesson du semestre en Ballroom Dancing Latin (Jive & Chacha), et nous avons pu gouter des gateaux au thé vert (++) et autres tortila et salsa ou autres snacks que chacun avait apporté pour fêté ce semestre ensemble :)

L'Indiana [IN] est un État d'une superficie de 94 321 km² situé dans le centre des États-Unis. Il est bordé au nord par le lac Michigan et par l'État du Michigan, à l'est par l'Ohio, au sud par le Kentucky et à l'ouest par l'Illinois. La capitale de l'État est Indianapolis. Le mot Indiana a été donné par le Congrès américain lorsque fut créé le Territoire du Nord-Ouest en 1800; il signifiait «terre des Indiens».

Bref historique

La région était peuplée d’Indiens — Potawatomis et Shawnees — lorsqu’elle a été explorée pour la première fois au XVII^e siècle par des Français venus du Canada (vallée du Saint-Laurent). La première colonie permanente, Vincennes, fut fondée en 1732. À cette époque, la région de l'Indiana formait le «Pays de l'Ohio», une région agricole et commerciale, quoique peu peuplée, située entre la colonie française de la vallée du Saint-Laurent et la colonie de la Louisiane. Mais le traité de Paris de 1763 contraignit la France à céder toute la région à la Grande-Bretagne, sauf la Louisiane qui revint à l'Espagne.

À l’issue de la guerre de l’Indépendance, l’Indiana est passé sous contrôle des États-Unis et fut érigé en territoire autonome en 1800. La lutte contre les Indiens n’a pris fin qu’avec la victoire de William Henry Harrison en 1811, à Tippecanoe, près de La Fayette. Un grand nombre d’Indiens furent déportés vers l’ouest entre 1820 et 1850. Gouverneur territorial de 1800 à 1812, Harrison est devenu en 1840 le neuvième président des États-Unis. La colonisation s’est alors accélérée et l’Indiana a intégré l’Union le 11 décembre 1816, devenant le 19e État américain. État essentiellement agricole jusqu’à la Première Guerre mondiale, l’Indiana a connu depuis lors un important développement industriel.

Bonjour à tous !

Hier j'ai pris quelques heures sur mon temps de travail pour aller à la Lambda Chi Date Night avec Michael. Ce genre de Date Night est généralement organisée de telle façon à ce que les fratboys et leur dates (en général leur copine ou des filles ils veulent inviter) réservent un endroit rien que pour l'usage de la fraternité et en profite quelques heures. La soirée karaoké avec les Delta Sig la veille d'Halloween a fonctionné un peu de la même façon. Mais hier, la spécificité de la soirée était que nous sommes allés... patiner ! Et pas patiner à glace, mais patiner façon 1980s, avec des patins 4 roulettes (comme dans notre enfance! ... non pas) et avec tout le monde ou presque (sauf Michael et moi qui ne savions même pas ce que nous allions faire) était déguisé comme ils s'imaginaient les 80s, en gros couleurs flashies, collants délirants (zèbres, léopards, dorés brillants), débardeurs et jean partout (surtout minishorts moulants ou en jean pour les garçons !!)... le tout était débridé et bien amusant !

Nous avons patiné quelques heures et sommes rentrés pour minuit, histoire que je me remette à ma présentation sur les initiatives REDD et les marché mondiaux du carbone (Global Carbon Markets). Passionnant :) Et je pense que j'ai bien réussit ma présentation ce matin :)

Le tout m'a fait beaucoup pensé aa plusieurs images "vues à la tv", la plus disponible étant celle ci (super marrante) : ne vous fiez pas à leur aisance, c'est beaucoup plus dur que ça n'en a l'air !!!
